World Wetlands Day 2024 – Coole Park Nature Reserve (Galway)

To celebrate World Wetlands Day, NPWS at Coole Park Nature Reserve (Gort) invite you to come and see this beautiful area and and its rich wetland habitats and wildlife!

Staff will be running a free guided walk and bird-spotting event at our turlough site, led by NPWS conservation and guide staff in Coole Park Nature Reserve.

Booking is not required – please meet at the Visitor Centre. at 2:30pm.

Though telescopes and binoculars are available, if you have your own, please bring them.

Please note: The walk is not suitable for very young children; only assistance dogs are permitted at events at Coole.

World Wetlands Day 2024 – Ballydangan Bog (Roscommon)

Join the Farm Peat team  at Ballydangan Bog on World Wetlands Day, February 2nd from 2 – 4pm, to hear from local farmers and community groups protecting nature in South Roscommon.

The Farm Peat Team will be joined on the day by  Ballydangan Bog Red Grouse Project, and the Uí Máine Kingdom Project. You will have a chance to learn about farming on peat soils, red grouse conservation, the lowland karst landscape, and the sharing of folklore through art.

It will be an opportunity to get some fresh air, spend time on the bog, and build new connections with the landscape and each other. All are welcome, farmers especially!

Join Cork City’s Biodiversity Officers to explore nature around the heart of Cork City!

On February 2nd a guided walk of the Lough will take place. Please wear suitable clothing/footwear for the conditions and meet at Glendalough Park at 14:00 (the walk will last approximately 1 hr).

  • Nature, well-being and green prescribing – Dr Roisin Costello (GP)

World Wetlands Day 2024 – Carrownagappul Bog (Galway)

National Parks & Wildlife Service in conjunction with “Galway Living Bog” welcomes you to Wetlands Day – We would love to see you at this year’s event exploring all that Carrownagappul bog has to offer. We will start at the Galway Living Bog Centre,  H53 TN67 Castlegar, (near Mountbellew) Co. Galway at 1pm with a 1 hour presentation on the bog’s ecology, hydrology, restoration measures, flora, fauna etc. We will then travel a short distance to the bog itself for a guided walk.

Carrownagappul Bog SAC, adjacent to the Galway town of Mountbellew, is one of the biggest SACs and one of the largest examples of remaining, restorable active raised bog in Ireland. Measuring 850 acres it contains fine examples of raised bog habitat and species, and between 2016 – 2020 it is one of 12 raised bogs nationwide that will be restored under a European funded LIFE project: ‘The Living Bog’.

World Wetlands Day 2024 – Clara Bog (Offaly)

Education Guides will be on the boardwalk between 1pm and 3pm on Friday 2nd February – call in anytime between 1pm and 3pm to talk to us, learn about Clara Bog Nature Reserve, and take part in some activities. Booking not required.

World Wetlands Day 2024 – Shannon (Clare)

World Wetlands Day occurs on 2nd February and to mark this global event you are invited to celebrate the importance of wetlands with an illustrated talk in Shannon Town Public Library (with light lunch) followed by a site visit to the Shannon Town Community Wetlands (STCW).

This year’s theme is ‘Wetlands and Human Wellbeing’. The Local Authority Waters Programme (LAWPRO) and the STCW will host a very special lunchtime event to explore the importance of wetlands and human wellbeing followed by a site visit to explore the biodiversity value of this urban wetlands site.

The event will be led by Ruairi 0 Conchüir (LAWPRO) and voluntary members of the STCW, Olive Carey and John O’ Brien. A major focus of the event
will be “Wetlands and Human Wellbeing’ and the key role the STCW has played in connecting the local community and schools with nature in & around the wetlands. Please bring suitable footwear for the site visit.

The talk will commence at 12:30 and the walk at 14:30. This is a free event and all are welcome!

World Wetlands Day 2024 – Ballycroy (Mayo)

Join us at 12.30pm on Friday the 2nd of February at The Ballycroy Visitor Centre as we celebrate World Wetlands Day with a guided walk around the 2km nature trail at the Visitor Centre.

Our guide will lead you on walk to discover how our blanket bogs were formed and how they are important habitats for our wildlife, act as carbon sinks and are a natural vast water reservoir.

At the visitor Centre we will have free Blanket bog plant ID sheets, and have a demonstration on how our Atlantic Blanket bogs were formed.

Our walk is free of charge and is all on our buggy and wheelchair friendly trail.  Please dress for the weather!

World Wetland’s Day 2024 – Tramore (Waterford)

Come see the wetland birds of Tramore Back Strand, a Special Protection Area for wintering waterfowl and waders on the Waterford coast!

Our local expert, Denis Cullen of the Irish Wildlife Trust and Tramore Eco Group will lead a birdwatching talk of this exceptional coastal wetland. Find out what birds visit Tramore Back Strand in winter and why the site is so important for wildlife.

The site is exposed so please dress for the weather and ground conditions – strong footwear and warm outdoor clothing are recommended!

Meet at the Bird Hide at the Tramore Nature Park (Grid 659623, 601 457).

This event is free to attend and is supported by Waterford City and County Council.

World Wetlands Day 2024 – Killarney (Kerry)

To celebrate WWD 2024, NPWS staff from Killarney National Park Education Centre will lead a walk along the Deenagh River from Kings’s Bridge to the mouth of the river where it flows into Lough Leane.

Along the way we will discuss the importance of conserving and protecting our waterways, we will look at some of the birds and animals that occur along the river (such as otter, heron, dipper, daubenton’s bat) and some of the interesting plant that occur in the riparian woodlands and on the river bank.
