Peatlands play a significant role in the natural and cultural heritage of Ireland. The first Peatlands Gathering, welcomes all who are interested in peatlands: community groups, farmers, land managers, forestry groups, peat producers, academics, public representatives, policy makers and the general public. The aim of the Gathering is to share knowledge and understandings and to cultivate a new beginning for peatlands in Ireland. We aim to create an open forum to promote dialogue about peatlands and their future. Key messages from the Gathering will be presented at the upcoming meeting on Climate Change (COP26) in Glasgow in November 2021.
The conference will aim to cover the following topics:
- Restoring bird populations through habitat and ecosystem restoration – managed restoration, rewilding and connectivity;
- Population reintroduction and reinforcement – the science of translocation, headstarting and other population management strategies;
- Control of invasive species and restoring community structure;
- The functional role of birds in ecosystem restoration;
- Progress towards Aichi biodiversity targets and government commitments to restoration.
Raising global awareness about the vital role of wetlands for people and our planet.
The day also marks the date of the adoption of the Convention on Wetlands on 2 February 1971, in the Iranian city of Ramsar on the shores of the Caspian Sea.
This year’s theme shines a spotlight on wetlands as a source of freshwater and encourages actions to restore them and stop their loss.
We are facing a growing freshwater crisis that threatens people and our planet. We use more freshwater than nature can replenish, and we are destroying the ecosystem that water and all life depend on most – Wetlands.
The 2021 campaign highlights the contribution of wetlands to the quantity and quality of freshwater on our planet. Water and wetlands are connected in an inseparable co-existence that is vital to life, our wellbeing and the health of our planet.

The International Research Conference is a federated organization dedicated to bringing together a significant number of diverse scholarly events for presentation within the conference program. Events will run over a span of time during the conference depending on the number and length of the presentations. The solicitor-led lunchtime Intermediate to Advanced level online workshop on Friday 11th December will deal with recent Irish and CJEU case law. There will be a Q&A session with experienced legal personnel.
The annual legal workshop will be held with McCann FitzGerald solicitors and led by their in-house experts on Environmental and Planning Law, the Habitats Directive, and litigation in respect of these. This lunchtime event will include an update on recent case law (including key Irish and CJEU cases) as well as providing the opportunity for the usual extended interactive Q&A session with the legal personnel. It will be run as an online Zoom workshop on Friday 11th December, following the format from previous years, presentations followed by a Q&A session.
The Coastwatch Survey is designed to give an overview of the state of the coast. It involves volunteers from all walks of life checking their chosen 500m stretch of coast (survey unit) once around low tide, and jotting observations down on the survey questionnaire while on the shore.
Stonewort Identification. 12 September at 10am. Charophytes, or Stoneworts, are complex aquatic green algae which can be tricky to identify.
Introduction to Aquatic Plant Identification. 5 September at 10am. This webinar will cover the main growth forms of aquatic plants, the key features you need to consider, resources to help with identification, and equipment used for sampling.
National Heritage Week celebrates all things heritage. It brings together communities, families, organisations, cultural institutions, academics and enthusiasts, to build awareness about the value of heritage and support its conservation.
Events include Dip your toe in the water on Water Heritage Day this Sunday August 23rd.
